Poland’s Dominance in Logistics: Parcel Locker Boom and the Future of Courier Services

We are often asked which sectors Poland is a forerunner in - one such sector is definitely the logistics and courier services market. The Polish market is both one of the most efficient and cost-effective in Europe (though the Czechs might make a similar claim about their own market). 


As of now, there are over 38,000 parcel locker machines in Poland, a 42% increase from 2022. This growth contributes to competitive pricing, with the estimated average cost per shipment being less than €3. For comparison, sending one copy of our publication costs around €3 in Poland, while in Finland, it costs up to €10. 


A recent Biostat study commissioned by 2PR reveals that 76.2% of Poles prefer collecting online purchases via parcel machines, with 83.1% considering them the best delivery option. The "Poles' Attitudes Towards Parcel Machines" report shows courier delivery to the door as the second most popular method, chosen by 18.3% of respondents. 


Parcel machines are particularly favored by the youngest demographic (18-29), with 90.6% viewing them as the optimal delivery method. Women slightly favor parcel machines more than men, at 77% versus 75.4%. The survey highlights the convenience, speed, and eco-friendliness of parcel machines, which have become a staple in Poland's urban logistics. 




The market leaders form an interesting mix of companies, with InPost being the pioneer, followed by Allegro (an e-commerce marketplace), DPD Polska Sp z o.o. (a courier service), and ORLEN Paczka (a gas station chain). The courier services of the national postal company, Pocztex, currently holds only 1% of the courier market. However, a major reform of Polish Post is underway and significant layoffs are planned in its organization.
